Georges Marteau and his collection, a taste of the Orient

Discover the collection of Georges Marteau at the Louvre Paris.

From 30/10/2019 to 03/02/2020

Some visitors to art galleries and museums don’t always appreciate where the pieces come from. Often the collections are acquired indirectly through other collectors, especially in the cases of some of the older, classical works or those from distant locations. French collections of foreign art and design are often bequeathed from the estates of serious collectors.

This is what happened with a collection of Oriental and Indo-Persian art at the Louvre. They have a series of pieces from Japan and the widen Far East that covers textiles, metalwork, books and a whole host of other decorative items. A current exhibition at the gallery displays these pieces in celebration of Georges Marteau – the collector responsible for such an impressive collection. It is a great opportunity to see items and design ideas that you might not see anywhere else. You can come and appreciate his fine eye and great taste until February 3rd.
